I have a special place in my heart for the twisted. The Fucked. The creepy and the disturbed but all of us on Luna Luna do! So to celebrate my own infatuation with the darker side here is my list of favorite fucked up videos, each fucked and creepy in their own special way.
Depeche Mode: “Wrong”
My sister sent me this one over 2 years ago and it still comes to mind every now and then for its absolutely beautiful shot composition but also for just how progressively fucked the main character’s situation gets as the video progresses. ALso, another reminder as to how unsettling the Michael Meyers-esque mask can be when used properly.
Pretty basic mechanic: tell a story backwards. As the narrative dials back from the, presumably, dead drowned girl the characters morph and change as your mind attempts to fill in the gaps as you slowly receive more information, leaving you with the unsettling notion that you can’t 100% put your finger on who the man is in relation to her. Enjoy your repeat viewings and bonus points to Alt-J for quoting Maurice Sendak.
Robbie Williams, “Rock DJ”
I still remember the 1st time I saw this video, back when VH1 used to show music videos and would have their top 10, 50, 100 lists. This was in the most shocking, and I love where Robbie took this so freaking much. When I hit the 3 minute mark I giggled with twisted glee. Nothing says hot like implied cannibalism and projectile body parts.
Nine Inch Nails, “Closer”
Nine Inch Nails can never NOT be so fucking sexy. Trent Rezner is still every gothy/rock chick’s wet dream… and probably that of most goth/rock boys too. The video is a blending of the visceral, sexy, and grotesque and thank fucking god for the internet because only after 10pm would VH1 ever show the unedited versions of this video (with handy little side by sides so you could see exactly what the “Missing Scene” inter-titles were covering. If you for some reason want to watch the edited version of this video, click HERE. (site’s weird and in Russian because I had a hard time finding the censored version on YouTube. This is a total win for the internet.)
Marilyn Manson, “The Beautiful People”
Maybe it’s nostalgia, maybe I’m feeling a little frisky today, or maybe it’s the fact that I’m still obsessed with how awesome it is that Kanye sampled this song in “Black Skinhead”, but this song needed a mention for at the very least being quintessential for anyone writing such a list. Keep doing what you doin’ you magnificent creature.
