Pussy Power: 4 Ways To Unleash Your Inner Catwoman

Michelle Pfeiffer’s genius portrayal of Catwoman in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns remains one of the most poignant, sensual and exciting performances ever captured on the silver screen. Pfeiffer’s delicate feline features punctuate a knockout performance worthy of cult worship. Selina Kyle is a complex character. On one hand she is wounded, girlish and vulnerable yet she is also powerful and self possessed. There is much to be learned from this complicated and endearingly sociopathic vixen.

1. Embrace Your Animal Nature

After being thrown out of a window by Christopher Walken and then chewed up by cats (we can all relate to this), Selina Kyle reawakens as Catwoman. A once meek and self doubting secretary is transformed into a dazzling and enigmatic seductress- a patent leather clad force to be reckoned with. Once Selina morphs into Catwoman she acquires extraordinary intuition and rapturous confidence. By tapping into our animal nature, we can unleash boundless reserves of catlike courage, curiosity, and grace.

Pre-kitty Selina Kyle was bullied and mild mannered. She was pushed around and patronized, overlooked and underappreciated. Once she became Catwoman all her repressed frustration turned into a drive for vindication. Struck down by a lightening bolt of awareness, she realized the ways in which the patriarchy was crushing her spirit and became the imperfect vigilante we so love. And while I’m not suggesting we blow up department stores (as she does) it is important to recognize the forces that keep us from reaching our potential and fight against them. Once we identify the shackles around our ankles we can snip them with thimbles.

3. Be Resilient (you have nine lives)

This one is self explanatory. Although we might not survive electrocution or being repeatedly shot in the stomach, as Catwoman does, we CAN survive life’s endless arsenal of bitch slaps. Do not be afraid to fail. Even if every facet of your life falls apart and you end up penniless and alone with frizzy hair, have faith that you will dust yourself off and start over. There’s nothing more powerful than our survival instinct-trust it and take risks.

4. Forgive yourself

Amid her wrath filled rampages, Catwoman has moments of remorse. Looking at her reflection on a store window, she asks herself: “Why are you doing this?” There is no answer. At one point or another, we all get a taste of self destruction, of crippling loss of control, sadistic streaks, and a capacity for pure evil. It’s part of being human. However, no matter how heinous our offenses (whether they be to ourselves or others) it’s important to forgive yourself, learn the lessons, and move forward. In cultivating compassion towards ourselves, we can grow from our follies, appreciate the ugliness and forge ahead stronger and only slightly worse for the wear.
