A Halloween Tribute To Veronica Lake

Veronica Lake I married a witch

I Married A Witch

Her sex was uncurable

the fluid scaffolding

of a woman’s body

a kind of genius/sicklier than

intellectual irritability.

We want to be safe

in a new happiness

the dissatisfied self

yearns for danger

as if Nirvana

could be whittled down

to an opiate that fizzles

in the mouth, another drug

the glass key turns

loneliness again

that fetishized grief

of Ambien and muscle relaxants

prescription reminders

our ghosts don’t eat.
